S355K2+N to EN10025-2 plates come in a variety of dimensions up to a maximum weight of 25 tonnes. Normal dimensions are 12m long and either 2500 mm or 3000 mm wide. In this grade all plates are rolled by Dillinger Hutte so improved performance can be expected in most cases compared to the requirements of EN10025-2

Superior Impact Properties of S355K2+N

The S355K2+N plates have much superior impact properties to S355 J2 + N plates as the energy used in the Charpy V notch test is increased from 27J to 40J. The standard test temperature remains the same at -20C but many plates have been tested at -40 C on a per heat basis.

This means that in many cases, the plates will significantly outperform what can normally be expected from a S355K2+N plate, and, in situations where speed is of the essence and customers cannot wait for mill delivery, may be further tested to S355 K4, S355 K5 or S355 L2. (note: this obviously depends on carefully picking plates with the right values and some luck – but it has been done!)

This is possible because our steel plates for structural engineering and construction are all rolled by Dillinger. The ultra low phosphorous and sulphur values in the steel mean that there are few micro-defects and inclusions in the steel and this means that they can be far tougher than S355K2+N steels produced exactly to the requirements of EN10025-2.

S355K2+N with Z35 Though Tensile Testing

Many of our S355K2+N plates come with Z35 testing already done at the mill. Z35 is the toughest level of through thickness testing commonly undertaken and is designed to ensure that thick plates are not at risk of lamellar tearing.

Because thick plates are rolled from thick slabs of steel it is normally harder to deform the core of the steel and avoid longitudinal imperfections which could result in the steel tearing or cracking when in use. However the S355K2+N plates that we stock, from Dillinger, have taken advantage of the exceptionally low sulphur content of the steel and the tremendous power of the rolling stand at Dillingen (which is able to apply approximately 11,000 tonnes) to produce 300 mm plates out of a 400 mm slab. This combination of low inclusions and excellent deformation produces superior steel plate.

For S355 J2 + N and S355K2+N plates that don’t come with Z35 testing we are able to do additional testing on these plates on customer request.

S355K2+N to EN10025-2 plates are available in thicknesses from 10 – 200mm. They come with an MTC to EN10204 3.2 and with the third party verification normally undertaken by Lloyds Register or DNV or in some cases both.

S355K2+N + Norsok M120/MDS Y05

These special plates are specially rolled to meet the Norsok M120 standard and the MDS Y05 requirements. As a result this is stated on the MTC making acceptance of these plates for offshore project simple. We also have a full range of EN10225 and API 2W offshore steels

S355K2+N Customers

Our customer bases for S355K2+N heavy steel plates in SE Asia is predominantly the heavy engineering sector with a focus on offshore requirements. Various plate have been used in hydroelectric projects in Vietnam and in offshore projects in Malaysia and Singapore. Plates shipped are typically between 100 and 150 mm and we are able to supply a large number from stock as required – even for such heavy plates!

We have 3 main strengths in S355K2+N steel plates

First, we have a lot of thick plates proving both the ability to supply single and multiple plates in a particular thickness from stock. Few steel stockholders focus on the heavy plate market; we are one of the few in Europe that can deliver regularly and consistently from our own stock.

Secondly, we focus on the quality of our S355K2+N plates. As engineering companies push the limits of what needs to be achieved we push the limits of the steel, each year supplying better and better performing plate.

Thirdly, we know that projects don’t always go to plan or are suddenly accelerated making a mill indent hugely problematic in keeping to schedules. We can deliver large quantities of S355K2+N plates from stock enabling project to be delivered on time.
