Steel plates at a container terminal awaiting shipment This page provides some information about how we ship steel. It is aimed at our Far Eastern customers and whilst it is generally correct for other regions please contact us if you have a specific enquiry.

Conventional

Our preferred shipping line for conventional shipments is Rickmers Linie as we find them the most reliable. Conventional shipments are for material wider than 2.2m and more than 11m long. Conventional shipping is more expensive than containerized shipping as the lack of standardization makes the loading/unloading process slower and more expensive.

If you have steel in transit on a Rickmers conventional vessel you can use this link to see where your steel is.

Steel shipped on conventional vessels is usually shipped from Antwerp

Containerised

Our preferred shipping line for steel which is being shipped using containers is Hanjin Line. Again we use them due to their reliability and the regularity of their sailings to the Far East. We ship using 20' and 40' dry containers.

The specifications of these are:

  20' 40'
Internal Dimensions
Length 5897mm 12031mm
Width 2348mm 2348mm
Height 2390mm 2390mm
Door Opening
Width 2336mm 2336mm
Height 2280mm 2280mm
Weight
Max Gross 30,480kg 32,500kg
Tare 2,240kg 3,750kg
Max Payload 28,240kg 28,750kg
Load capacity 33m³ 68m³

The door opening size is the limiting factor for plate width and unfortunately plates can no longer be tilted inside a container.

If we have used Hanjin to ship your steel you can track it using the Bill of Lading number, booking number or by the vessel using this link.

Steel shipped using a container ship usually from Tilbury, Felixstowe or Antwerp.
