ASME SA 516 Grade 70 steel is one of the most popular steels for boilers, pressure vessels and heat exchangers. It is excellent at low temperature and have good results on standard Charpy V Notch toughness tests. Thick ASME SA 516 Grade 70 Plates

With many stockholders reducing their steel inventory to save costs we have invested in a significant number of heavy ASME SA516 Grade 70 pressure vessel quality plates. This enables us to offer a full selection of SA516 Gr. 70 plates at thicknesses all the way up to 300 mm. When you come to us with a requirement for, say, 100mm plates we have many more than just a single plate in stock. We have the full requirements of the steel MTO in stock and it can be picked and loaded onto a truck for delivery as early as the next day (depending on the production schedule).

The other important thing about thick PV plates is their quality of the steel making. Many mills are not approved by Lloyds or DNV for producing thick plates as they either don’t have the experience to consistently deliver plates to the required quality – or they don’t have the rolling mills capable of doing it.

The rolling mill at Dillingen can deliver 11,000 tonnes of force enabling it to deform the core of 400mm ASME SA516 Grade 70 slabs to produce SA516 Grade 70 plates that have a consistent microstructure throughout the plate. This means far fewer defects and a significantly tougher steel even at higher thicknesses (where yield strength often drops off rapidly)

High Quality SA516 Grade 70 Steel Plates

ASME SA516 Grade 70 plates are used in a large number of pressure applications covered by the ASME code and the Pressure Equipment Directive. Our focus is on customers who are using the plates for applications in the oil and the gas industry – upstream and downstream – where the technical quality of the steel is critically important.

All of our mills are approved mills for many, if not all, of the worlds major oil and gas companies. This means that the quality of the steel making has already been pre-approved. There’s a good reason for this. The pressure vessel steel plates that come from our mills – mainly Dillinger, Thyssen and NLMK Clabecq are the result of hundreds of years of steel making experience. In Dillinger’s case it is over 300 years of making steel at the same site.

Three hundred years of incremental improvements means that our plates deliver the ultra low sulphur and phosphorous that is so critical in ensuring defect free vessels and reactors. Sulphur values in SA516 70 steel are typically 70 times lower than required by the A 516/A 516M standard, whilst phosphorous is typically 30 times lower.

That’s a big deal because not only does it mean that the chance of the ASME SA516 Grade 70 plate failing a retest during production is vanishingly low, but it also means faster approval by the end user of the MTCs and a much much better end product that will over its lifetime reduce operating expenses because of its greater reliability and improved maintainability.

All of plates meet this high quality requirement. That means thousands of tonnes available for your project that can be delivered to the port in a matter of a couple of days allowing you to expedite production or help win another tender.

With thousands of tonnes of SA516 Grade 70 in stock at a single location close to one of the world’s busiest ports we have the number of plates to offer a huge diversity in plate sizes and thicknesses and deliver them worldwide.

As a heavy plate stockist we don’t focus on the thin plates. So we don’t stock any plates less than 5mm thick. From 5mm (in 2055, 2500 and 3000mm by 12m) all the way up to massive 300mm plates (also available as S355NL) we can satisfy the most demanding requirements of engineering customers building heavy reactors and massive columns.

As with our structural steel stock we are able to support customers requiring immediate delivery of several hundred tonnes of SA516 70 as well as customers who require single 500kg plates.
