Steels – Introduction

We focus on providing very high quality pressure vessel plate with quayside delivery in 7 –10 days. Our key product ranges are ASTM A 516 and ASTMA 387. We also supply construction steels – S275, S355, S460; wear resistant steels – to 400HB and 500HB and quenched and tempered steels to S 690 and higher.

Pressure vessel quality steel is typically used for a wide range of purposes. These include: pressure vessels, boilers, heat exchangers, gas turbines, compressors, storage tanks and spheres and a variety of skid mounted equipment for the oil and gas industry.

A 516:

ASTM A 516 is a carbon steel designed for use as a pressure vessel plate in low and moderate temperature service.

These plates are usually used in boilers and welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required.

Oakley Steel sells A / SA 516 in grades 60 and 70.

A516+HIC:

ASTM A 516 plate with resistance to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) meets the requirements of the 516 standard but in addition meets the requirements of NACE MR 0175 for HIC resistance.

A516 with HIC resistance is supplied to ASTM A516 grade 60, grade 65 and grade 70.

A516+NACE:

ASTM A516 steel plates to NACE are steel plates which meet the requirements of A516 and also comply with the requirements of NACE MR0175 / ISO15156 but which are not expected to be exposed to even trace amounts of H²S (Hydrogen Sulphide).

A516+NACE is provided in grades A516 grade 60 and grade 70.

A387:

ASTM A387 is a chromium molybdenum alloy steel designed for use as a pressure vessel plate at elevated temperatures.

Oakley Steel supplies chrome moly plates in ASTM A387 grades 5, 11, 12 and 22 – all class 2.

Where your specification is in a different standard for example BS EN 10028 we are often able to offer an equivalent steel, dual certified plates, or if required recertification to the standard that you require.
