ASTM A 387 or ASME SA 387
ASTM A 387 or ASME SA 387 is a great steel for pressure vessels. It is primarily intended for use in welded boilers and pressure vessels operating at high temperatures.
The main users of this steel are the chemical and petrochemical industries in engineering applications with temperatures between 350 and 600 degrees C.
Oakley Steel sources its steel exclusively from European mills so that we can offer high quality steel for demanding applications.
We offer it in the following grades, (all Class 2)
• Grade 5, which is equivalent to DIN 17155 12CrMo19-5
• Grade 11, which is equivalent to EN 10078 2 13CrMo4-5
• Grade 12, which is equivalent to EN 10078 2 13CrMo4-5
• Grade 22, which is equivalent to EN 10078 2 11CrMo9-10 and DIN 17155
10CrMo9-10
We can offer the following dimensions
Thickness 3mm to 160mm Width 1000mm to 3000mm Length up to 12000mm (Minimum thickness depends on grade required). Pricing will vary dependent on thickness and other requirements.
Orders up to 25 tonnes can be supplied from stock and can be shipped about 10 days after confirmation of purchase order. Orders above 25 tonnes are new rolling and will be subject to final confirmation from the mill.
Shipping times are additional to the above lead times.
Steel Description
SA A 387 comes in 10 grades of which Oakley Steel supplies grades 5,11, 12 and 22. The principal chemical difference between the grades is in the % of Chromium and Molybdenum. Grade 2 contains 0.5% Cr and 0.5% Mo whilst Grade 9 contains 9% Cr and 1% Mo.
The addition of Molybdenum improves the mechanical properties at high temperatures whilst the Cr improve its heat resistance. Mn also improves the heat resistance.
For A 387 Gr 22, the ASTM standard composition is as follows, dependent on grade.
• Carbon 0.05 to 0.15%
• Manganese 0.4 to 0.6%
• Phosphorous 0.035%
• Sulphur 0.035%
• Silicon 0.5%
• Chromium 2.0 to 2.5%
• Molybdenum 0.9 to 1.1%
The tensile strength of Grade 22, Class 2, is between 515 to 690 MPa with a yield strength of 310 MPa, dependent on mill

Industry Requirements
At Oakley Steel we’ve found that our customers come to us with a wide range of specifications that their engineers and designers have given to them.
Some of them won’t be found on this page because almost every country it seems has their own set of standards – ASTM, DIN and BS for example.
But the engineering solution is the same in whichever standard that you’re working in. We can usually offer an equivalent grade of steel which has the properties that you need.
